Of the four all-in-one car seats compared here, the Britax One4Life and Evenflo Revolve360 Extend rear-face longest, to 50 lb; the Graco 4Ever DLX and Chicco OneFit stop at 40 lb. Beyond that, pick on booster limit and width: the Britax booster goes to 120 lb and 63 in, the Graco is the only one with a backless mode, and the Britax One4Life Slim is the narrowest at 17.5 in.

The AAP's framing is the right one: "No one seat is the 'best' or 'safest.' The best seat is the one that fits your child's size, is correctly installed, fits well in your vehicle, and is used properly every time you drive." So this comparison lays out the makers' limits for you to match to your child and your car.

Chicco's NextFit is a convertible seat with no booster mode, and we did not find it in stock from Amazon.com, so Chicco's all-in-one line, the OneFit, is what we compare.

Rear-facing limits come first

The AAP's car safety seat guide for families says: "All infants and toddlers should continue to ride in a rear facing seat as long as possible until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat manufacturer." NHTSA's car seat guide calls a rear-facing seat "the best seat for your young child to use."

• To 50 lb: Britax One4Life (and Slim) and Evenflo Revolve360 Extend.
• To 40 lb: Graco 4Ever DLX (and Slim), Chicco OneFit LX and OneFit Max.

Height often runs out before weight: Britax lists rear-facing to 49 in, Evenflo to 48 in and the Chicco OneFit Max to 43 in. Check the head-clearance rule in your manual too.

Key point: a lower forward-facing minimum is not a reason to turn a child around sooner. Graco's and Chicco's forward-facing harness starts at 26.5 lb and Britax's at 30 lb, and Evenflo requires a child to be at least two before forward-facing in the Revolve360 Extend.

How long each keeps a child in a harness

The AAP says "it is best for children to ride in a seat with a harness as long as possible, at least to 4 years of age." All four brands harness to 65 lb forward-facing; height is the difference:

• Chicco OneFit Max: harness to 54 in, the tallest limit here.
• Britax One4Life and Evenflo Revolve360 Extend: to 49 in.
• Graco 4Ever DLX and Chicco OneFit LX: the listings give weight limits only; check the manual for height.

Which booster mode lasts longest

The booster mode is what makes these all-in-ones rather than convertibles. The AAP says children should use a booster "until the vehicle seat belt fits properly, typically when they have reached 4 feet 9 inches in height and are 8 to 12 years of age."

• Britax One4Life: belt-positioning booster to 120 lb and 63 in, per Britax.
• Evenflo Revolve360 Extend: high-back booster to 120 lb.
• Graco 4Ever DLX: high-back booster to 100 lb, then backless to 120 lb, the only backless mode of the four.
• Chicco OneFit: booster to 100 lb; the OneFit Max lists 57 in.

A booster used at age 8 or 9 comes from a seat bought at birth. A 10-year lifespan covers that, but check the date on the label before the booster years begin.

Width and weight

Width decides whether a seat fits beside another seat or a passenger.

• Narrowest: Britax One4Life Slim at 17.5 in, then the Graco 4Ever DLX Slim at 18.9 in.
• Standard: Chicco OneFit LX (19 in on its listing), Britax One4Life and Chicco OneFit Max (19.5 in), and Evenflo Revolve360 Extend (19.8 in).
