A high chair gets food on it three times a day for a year or more, so how it cleans matters as much as how it looks. The difference comes down to a few design choices you can check on any listing before you buy.
How we chose:
- We did not test these high chairs. Each is described from its listing, with brand claims labelled as the brand's.
- Each is sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and was in stock when we checked in September 2026.
- Safety facts come from the CPSC's high chair business guidance and our own recall checker.
- Prices are list prices; sale prices vary.

What Makes a High Chair Easy to Clean?
Three features do most of the work:
- A dishwasher-safe tray or insert. Five of the eight listings here say so: Ingenuity (both), Joovy, Peg Perego and Abiie.
- A seat without fabric. Foam (Ingenuity), leatherette (Joovy, Peg Perego) or a one-piece plastic seat (Chicco) wipes down; a fabric cover has to come off and go in the wash.
- A harness you can remove. Ingenuity says its harness and straps are machine washable, and Chicco's harness is quick to remove.
Pro tip: check how the tray comes off before you buy. The Ingenuity Trio Elite and Abiie trays detach one-handed, and the Joovy Nook's tray swings open, so you can clean without lifting the baby out first.
Are High Chairs Safe?
Every high chair sold in the US must meet a federal safety standard. The CPSC's high chair guidance says the rule is at 16 CFR part 1231 and incorporates ASTM F404; chairs made after July 23, 2022 must meet ASTM F404-21. Its requirements cover the restraint system, stability, scissoring and pinching, openings, and the tray's integrity.
Our recall checker lists 15 CPSC recalls with "high chair" in the title since January 2023, most for fall and entrapment hazards and many for chairs that violated the federal standard. One was a Peg Perego Tatamia, a different model from the Siesta above. Search your chair's brand and model before buying secondhand.
Key point: use the five-point harness every meal. A tray keeps food in place; it does not keep a baby in the seat.
The Peg Perego Siesta reclines flat, but a high chair is not a sleep space. The AAP's safe sleep guidance says a baby who falls asleep in a seat should be moved to a firm, flat sleep surface on their back.
Which High Chair Is Best for You?
- Fastest cleanup: the Ingenuity SmartClean Trio Elite ($119.99), with no fabric and a dishwasher-safe tray.
- Small kitchen: the Graco Slim Snacker ($99.99) folds one-handed and stands on its own; the Joovy Nook ($139.90) folds flat.
- Tight budget: the Chicco Zest ($69.99), with a one-piece seat and a 60 lb limit.
- A chair that lasts: the Stokke Tripp Trapp ($349.00) or Abiie Beyond Junior ($238.00), which grow into a child's chair.
Bottom line: if cleanup is what you dread, choose a chair with no fabric and a dishwasher-safe tray, and check the listing says both.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest high chair to clean?
Chairs without fabric covers and with dishwasher-safe trays clean fastest. The Ingenuity SmartClean Trio Elite ($119.99) has a wipeable frame, a removable EVA foam insert and a one-hand, dishwasher-safe tray; the Ingenuity Full Course adds a second dishwasher-safe tray.
Are wooden high chairs harder to clean?
Not necessarily. The Abiie Beyond Junior has a dishwasher-safe tray cover and water-resistant cushions, per Abiie. The Stokke Tripp Trapp bundle here has no tray, and its listing doesn't make cleaning claims, so plan on wiping the wood and the Baby Set by hand.
When can a baby use a high chair?
Check each chair's own range: the Ingenuity chairs start at 6 months, and the Stokke Baby Set is listed for 6 to 36 months. Always use the five-point harness.
Are high chairs regulated?
Yes. The CPSC says high chairs must meet the federal standard at 16 CFR part 1231, which incorporates ASTM F404; chairs made after July 23, 2022 must meet ASTM F404-21. Our recall checker lists 15 high chair recalls since January 2023.
Can a baby nap in a reclining high chair?
No. A high chair isn't a sleep space. The AAP says that if a baby falls asleep in a seat, you should move them to a firm, flat sleep surface on their back as soon as possible.
