Do You Need Baby Laundry Detergent? (2026): Fragrance-Free Picks and Pod Safety

This is for parents wondering whether a newborn needs special detergent. Short answer: no guidance we found says so. What matters, per the American Academy of Dermatology, is fragrance-free for eczema-prone skin, and, per the AAP and CPSC, keeping detergent packets away from small children. Below are eight detergents and a stain remover compared on what their labels claim.

What the AAD says about detergent and eczema

We found no guidance from the AAP or the AAD saying babies need a detergent sold for babies. What the AAD does say, for children with eczema, is that many products that touch the skin can trigger a flare, and a reaction can take hours or days to show up.

Its advice is about the label, not the brand: "Choose fragrance-free rather than unscented products to help prevent eczema outbreaks in your child." And the difference: "Unscented means that a fragrance is masked, so you cannot smell it. Fragrance-free means the products is free of all fragrances, even ones that you cannot smell."

The AAD also suggests asking your child's dermatologist for product recommendations and looking for the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance, which covers laundry detergent among other products.

Key point: a "baby" detergent can still carry a scent. The Dreft Baby listing says no dyes but doesn't claim fragrance-free, and Dreft Unscented is labeled unscented. For sensitive or eczema-prone skin, look for "fragrance-free" or "free of perfumes."

Four fragrance-free picks

all free clear, for a certified fragrance-free liquid (110 loads). all says it is 100% free of perfumes and dyes, and it is EPA Safer Choice certified. The "#1 recommended by dermatologists" line is the brand's own claim.

Tide Free & Gentle, if you want the name you'll find anywhere. Tide says it is free of dyes and perfumes and recognized by the NEA, EPA Safer Choice and the National Psoriasis Foundation.

Molly's Suds Baby, if you prefer powder. Fragrance free with no dyes, per the brand, with enzymes aimed at milk, formula and poop stains. It is sold from the brand's own store.

Seventh Generation Free & Clear, if you want plant-based. Made without fragrances, dyes, masking agents or optical brighteners, per the brand, and EPA Safer Choice certified.

The baby-labeled detergents

Dreft Baby is dermatologist tested for sensitive skin with no added chlorine bleach or dyes, per Dreft. Its listing doesn't claim to be fragrance-free.

Dreft Unscented drops the scent. By the AAD's definitions, unscented is not fragrance-free, so if your child's skin reacts, compare ingredient lists or switch to a fragrance-free detergent.

ATTITUDE Baby is dermatologist tested and EWG Verified, per the brand, and also labeled unscented.

Some baby detergents keep a scent on purpose: ARM & HAMMER's lists a "Cuddly Clean Scent", which is why it is not here.

Why we'd skip pods while your child is small

The laundry hazard the AAP singles out is the detergent packet. The AAP says: "Detergent in single-use laundry packets is very concentrated and can be toxic. Even a small amount of the detergent can cause serious breathing or stomach problems or eye irritation."

On why children are at risk: "The packets dissolve quickly when in contact with water, wet hands, or saliva. Biting a packet can cause it to burst, shooting detergent into the child's mouth and throat or eyes." Its advice is to never let children handle the packets and to "seal the container and store it in a locked cabinet after each use."

The CPSC adds: "Store laundry packets in their original containers and out of a child's sight and reach. Do not let children handle laundry detergent packets."

The packaging can fail too. In 2024 Procter & Gamble recalled about 8.2 million bags of Tide, Gain, Ace and Ariel packets, including Tide Pods Free & Gentle, because "the outer packaging meant to prevent access to the contents can split open near the zipper track." The recall covered certain lot codes of flexible film bags made from September 2023 to February 2024; lot codes are listed at pg.com/bags.

If you keep pods, close the tub and lock it away every time, and check any flexible bag's lot code against that recall. With a crawler or toddler at home, we'd buy liquid or powder instead.

Storing any detergent

• Original container, sealed after each use, as the CPSC advises.
• Locked up. The AAP lists laundry detergent in liquid, powder and packet form among the cleaning products to keep in a cabinet with a lock or safety latch; our cabinet locks guide covers the hardware.
• If a child gets into it, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222, which poison.org describes as "free, expert, and confidential." If the child collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing or can't be awakened, call 911.

Spit-up, formula and blowout stains

The Puracy Baby Stain Remover is made without dyes or perfumes, per the brand, and is listed for milk, formula, poop and food stains on clothes, bibs and cloth diapers. Molly's Suds' listing says to treat stains within 24 hours and follow each garment's care label.
