Car Seat Accessories: What's Safe, What Voids the Warranty (2026)

The car seat aisle is full of add-ons: plush strap covers, head supports, liners, bunting bags, mirrors, shades. Some are harmless. Some change how the harness holds your child in a crash, and those are the ones the seat maker never tested.

This guide sorts car seat accessories by one rule from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP): did it come with the seat, or did the seat's maker make or approve it? Then it lists picks for the things the rule allows.

How we chose:

• We did not test these accessories or crash test anything. "Crash tested" on a listing is the maker's claim.
• Every pick was sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock when we checked in September 2026. Prices are list prices.
• For each pick we say whether a car seat maker made or approved it, per its listing.

The Rule: If It Didn't Come With the Seat, Don't Add It

The AAP's car seat guide for families is direct:

• "Do not place padding under or behind your child or use any sort of car safety seat insert unless it came with the seat or was made by the manufacturer for use with that specific seat."
• "Do not use extra products unless they came with the seat or are specifically approved by the seat manufacturer. These products are not covered by any federal safety standards, and the AAP does not recommend they be used."

Car seat makers say the same, and add a warranty warning. Britax's warranty says: "The use of non-Britax Child Safety, Inc. covers, inserts, toys, accessories, or tightening devices is not approved by Britax®. Their use could cause this restraint to fail Federal Safety Standards or perform worse in a crash. Their use automatically voids the Britax warranty."

Aftermarket add-ons can fail in other ways too. In 2025, AMTRADING recalled Hoovy cooling gel pads for car seats and strollers. The pads "can become hot if left in the sun or a hot car, posing a burn hazard."

Key point: think of the car seat as three zones.

1. Between your child and the seat or harness (liners, inserts, head supports, strap covers): only what came with the seat or the seat maker approves.
2. Over the buckled harness (ponchos, blankets, shower-cap covers): the AAP allows these, as long as nothing goes under your child.
3. Attached to the car, not the seat (mirrors, sunshades, kick mats): outside the seat maker's rule, but keep them light and secure.

Which Car Seat Accessories Are Safe?

Liners and Inserts: Only From Your Seat's Maker

The Britax Car Seat Waterproof Liner ($39.99) is a good example of an approved liner. Britax says it is "crash tested for use with all Britax car seats."

Its listing also says it fits most other brands of harnessed seats. By the AAP's rule, that isn't enough. A liner goes under your child, so it should be made by your seat's maker for that seat. Use this one in a Britax seat only.

If you have another brand, check your manual or the maker's site for its own liner or replacement cover.

Pro tip: the newborn insert, head pillow and strap pads that came in the box are part of the tested seat. Use them as the manual says, and don't add a second set from another brand.

How to Keep a Baby Warm in a Car Seat

The AAP's winter car seat tips start with coats: "bulky clothing, including winter coats and snowsuits, should not be worn underneath the harness of a car seat."

The reason: "In a car crash, fluffy padding in a coat immediately flattens out from the force, leaving extra space under the harness. A child can then slip through the straps and be thrown from the seat."

What the AAP suggests instead:

• Thin layers, with a thin fleece jacket on top if needed.
• A coat or blanket over the straps. "You can add a blanket over the top of the harness straps or put your child's winter coat on backwards (over the buckled harness straps) after they are buckled up."
• Ponchos. "Some parents prefer products such as poncho-style coats or jackets that zip down the sides so the back can flip forward over the harness."
• Covers with nothing underneath. "Use a car seat cover ONLY if it does not have a layer under the baby."

The AAP adds a warning about shopping: "Many retailers carry car seat bundling products that are not safe to use in a car seat. Just because it's on the shelf at the store or sold online does not mean it is safe!"

Two picks that follow those rules:

• Skip Hop Stroll & Go Winter Car Seat Cover ($40.00): a shower-cap style cover for an infant carrier. It goes around the outside with an elastic edge, and the front flap rolls back or zips off. Keep your baby's face uncovered, as the AAP says, and take the cover off once the car warms up.
• Birdy Boutique Car Seat Poncho ($29.99): a fleece poncho you put on after buckling, so it drapes over the harness and the seat. Its listing says it was crash tested. That's the brand's claim, and no car seat maker approves it.

Bottom line: the harness goes on first, against thin clothing. Warmth goes on top.

Are Car Seat Mirrors Safe?

A mirror lets you see a rear-facing baby. It attaches to the vehicle headrest, not the car seat, so the seat maker's accessory rule doesn't directly apply.

We found no federal standard that covers car mirrors. What you can check is weight, material and how it attaches.

The Britax Baby Car Mirror ($39.99) is made by a car seat maker. It weighs about 1 lb, uses a shatterproof mirror, and straps to the headrest. Britax says it "has been crash tested to ensure safety in the event of a collision"; we couldn't verify that independently.

Pro tip: tighten the straps until the mirror doesn't move, and don't watch the mirror while you drive.

Sunshades, Kick Mats and Organizers

These attach to the car, not the seat.

• Munchkin Brica Car Window Shade ($16.99 for two): mesh roller shades for side windows, with clips or suction cups. The listing says an indicator turns white when the car is too hot.
• Diono Stow 'n Go ($12.99): a kick mat and organizer that straps to the back of the front seat, from a car seat maker. Keep the pockets for light, soft things.

A shade doesn't make a parked car safe. The AAP lists heatstroke among the dangers of leaving a child alone in a car, "because temperatures can reach deadly levels in minutes." Never leave your child in the car, shaded or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do aftermarket car seat accessories void the warranty?

They can. Britax's warranty says non-Britax covers, inserts, toys, accessories or tightening devices "automatically" void it, and could make the seat fail federal standards or perform worse in a crash. Check your own seat's manual.

Can my baby wear a winter coat in the car seat?
