Quick answer

Match the sleep sack's TOG to the nursery's temperature: roughly 0.5 to 1.0 TOG for a warm room around 75°F, 1.0 to 1.5 TOG for 68 to 72°F, and 2.5 TOG for a cool 61 to 68°F room. Brands' charts differ by a few degrees, and the AAP says baby needs only one more layer than you.

A sleep sack, also called a wearable blanket, keeps a baby warm without a loose blanket in the crib. The only real decision is how warm, and that is what the TOG rating tells you.

How we chose: we did not test these sleep sacks. The temperature ranges come from three makers' published charts, HALO's TOG chart, Love to Dream's TOG temperature chart, and aden + anais's TOG guide. Safety guidance comes from the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guide. Each product is sold by Amazon.com or its maker and was in stock in September 2026.

Which TOG Should You Use at Each Room Temperature?

The three charts agree on the direction but not on exact numbers:

Room temperature HALO Love to Dream aden + anais
Warm (about 75°F and up) 0.5-1.0 TOG (68-77°F) 0.2 TOG (75-81°F) 0.2-1.0 TOG (75°F and up)
Average (about 68-75°F) 0.5-1.0 TOG, or 1.5 TOG (64-75°F) 1.0 TOG (68-75°F) 1.0-2.5 TOG (68-75°F)
Cool (about 61-68°F) 2.0-3.0 TOG (60-72°F) 1.5 TOG (64-72°F), 2.5 TOG (61-68°F) 2.5-3.5 TOG (61-68°F)
Cold (below 61°F) Not listed 3.5 TOG 3.5-4.5+ TOG

Key point: these are guidelines, not rules. HALO's own chart says "your nursery's temperature, your baby's clothing layers, and your baby's individual comfort should all be considered." Even HALO's listing for its 0.5 TOG sack gives a narrower range (72 to 75°F) than its chart.

The Sleep Sacks

Burt's Bees Beekeeper 0.5 or 1.5 Warm or average rooms Organic cotton Amazon.com $18.91

Love to Dream Long Sleeve 2.5 2.5 61-68°F Quilted cotton Love to Dream $59.95

Best for most homes: a 1.0 TOG sleep sack, such as the Kyte Baby 1.0, covers an average room of about 68 to 75°F on all three charts. Add a 0.5 for summer or a 2.5 for winter.

What Should Your Baby Wear Under a Sleep Sack?

The AAP's rule is simple: "Your baby only needs one more layer than you would wear in the same environment to be comfortable." A sleep sack counts as a layer.

  • In a warm room, a short-sleeved bodysuit under a 0.5 TOG sack is usually enough.
  • In a cool room, footed pajamas under a warmer sack.
  • The AAP also says: "Don't put a hat on your baby while indoors once you're home from the hospital."

A footed sleeper is the usual base layer under a sleep sack on cooler nights.

How Do You Know If Your Baby Is Too Hot?

The AAP warns that "overheating can increase the risk of SIDS," and tells parents to "check your baby for signs of overheating such as sweating, a hot chest or flushed skin."

Pro tip: check your baby's chest, one of the signs the AAP names, and if it feels hot or damp, drop a layer or step down a TOG.

What Should You Avoid?

  • Weighted sleep sacks and swaddles. The AAP is explicit: "Don't use weighted blankets, sleepers, swaddles or other weighted objects on or near your baby."
  • Loose blankets. The AAP suggests layers of clothing or a wearable blanket instead.
  • Swaddling once your baby tries to roll. The AAP says: "When your baby looks like they're trying to roll over, you should stop swaddling them." A sleeveless or long-sleeve sleep sack with arms free is the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What TOG sleep sack should I use at 70°F?

Around 1.0 TOG. At 70°F, Love to Dream's chart puts you in its 1.0 TOG band (68 to 75°F), aden + anais recommends 1.0 to 2.5, and HALO's chart covers it with 0.5 to 1.0 or 1.5 TOG. Adjust the layer underneath rather than jumping TOGs.

What does TOG mean on a sleep sack?

TOG stands for "thermal overall grade," a measure of how well a fabric insulates. A higher TOG means a warmer sleep sack: 0.2 to 0.5 is lightweight, about 1.0 is all-season, and 2.5 or more is for cool rooms.

Is a 2.5 TOG sleep sack too warm?

It is for most rooms above 68°F. Love to Dream designs its 2.5 TOG for 61 to 68°F and aden + anais recommends 2.5 to 3.5 TOG for that range. Check the room temperature and your baby for sweating or a hot chest.

Are weighted sleep sacks safe?

No. The AAP says not to use weighted blankets, sleepers, swaddles, or other weighted objects on or near your baby. None of the sleep sacks here are weighted.

How many sleep sacks do I need?

At least two in the TOG that suits your nursery, so one can be in the wash, plus one lighter or warmer sack if your room temperature changes a lot between seasons.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: buy by room temperature, not by season. A 1.0 TOG sleep sack like the Kyte Baby 1.0 ($55.99) suits most homes; add a 0.5 TOG like the HALO SleepSack Cotton ($34.95) or budget Burt's Bees Beekeeper ($18.91) for warm rooms, and a 2.5 TOG like the Love to Dream Long Sleeve ($59.95) for cold ones. Dress your baby in one more layer than you, and skip anything weighted.
