When to Move From a Crib to a Toddler Bed (2026), and the Beds and Conversion Kits Worth Buying

Parents often plan the move from crib to bed around a birthday, but age is not the signal the American Academy of Pediatrics uses. It looks at climbing and height. This guide covers when to switch, what the federal toddler bed rule covers, and the beds, conversion kit and bed rails worth considering.

When Should You Move From a Crib to a Toddler Bed?

The AAP gives three signals. Any one of them is enough.

The AAP's crib-buying guide says the same thing more simply: "Once children are about 3 feet tall, they should start sleeping in a bed." It adds that if you are worried about falls, "you may want to start with the mattress on the floor" (AAP: Choosing a Crib).

Key point: the reason is falls. The AAP says "the most common falls occur when a baby tries to climb out." That is also why it says not to use bumper pads: "toddlers can use a bumper guard to help them climb and fall out."

Pro tip: measure the crib rail against your child standing next to it. If the top of the rail is below their chest, it is time, whatever their age.

What Does the Federal Toddler Bed Rule Cover?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission's toddler bed business guidance explains that toddler beds sold in the U.S. must meet a mandatory standard, 16 CFR part 1217, which incorporates ASTM F1821. The current version, ASTM F1821-19ɛ1, applies to toddler beds made or imported on or after January 27, 2020.

The rule defines a toddler bed as one sized for a full-size crib mattress, at least 51⅝ by 27¼ inches, and intended for a child "not less than 15 months of age and who weighs no more than 50 lbs." Its requirements cover openings, spindle and slat strength, and the mattress support.

What this means when you shop:

• A toddler bed reuses your crib mattress. All five beds here say they fit a standard full-size crib mattress, and none include one.
• Check the weight limit. The Dream On Me listings both state a 50 lb limit, which matches the federal definition. A child who outgrows it needs a twin bed.
• Certification badges measure different things. GREENGUARD Gold is about chemical emissions into indoor air. JPMA and Baby Safety Alliance marks refer to testing against safety standards.

Best for: a toddler bed makes most sense when you want to keep using the crib mattress for another year or two, or when the crib stays in use for a younger sibling.

Conversion Kit or New Toddler Bed?

If you bought a convertible crib, the cheapest route is often its own toddler rail, sold as a conversion kit. The catch is fit: a kit works only with the crib models it names.

The DaVinci M12599 kit ($89.00) is a good example of a listing that makes this easy. It names four compatible cribs by model number: Charlie (M12801), Grove (M9301), Liam (M13401G) and Nathan (M12501). Find the model number on your crib's label or manual and match it exactly.

Pro tip: do not rely on a crib's name alone. We left out one brand-name kit because its listing title and its compatibility line named two different cribs in the same collection.

If your crib does not convert, or you want the crib for a new baby, a separate toddler bed like the Delta Children Canton ($69.00) or the Dream On Me Brookside ($64.97) costs about the same as a kit.

When Do You Need a Bed Rail?

A bed rail is for the next step, when your child moves to a twin or larger bed. The CPSC's portable bed rail guidance describes a children's bed rail as "intended to be installed on an adult bed to prevent children from falling out," for "children who can get in and out of bed unassisted (typically from 2 to 5 years of age)." These rails must meet 16 CFR part 1224, which incorporates ASTM F2085.

Both Regalo rails here say "Recommended for children ages 2-5," fit twin, full and queen beds, and are designed for a mattress with a box spring. The 43 in rail ($27.78) covers most of a twin bed's side; the 54 in rail ($34.99) covers more for a child who rolls.

Key point: buy bed rails from a known brand and seller. CPSC recall records show children's bed rails sold on Amazon by third-party sellers, including WYBITNY and HOMEAL rails, recalled in late 2025 for violating the mandatory standard because of entrapment risk. Toddler beds with built-in rails, like the Storkcraft and Graco, do not need a separate rail.

How Do You Make the Switch Go Smoothly?

The AAP's big kid bed advice, by pediatrician and SIDS researcher Rachel Moon, covers both safety and sleep.

Make the room safe for a climber:

• "While you are waiting to get a new bed, place the crib mattress on the floor."
• Clear away furniture and large toys, like rocking horses, that your child could fall against.

• Prevent dressers and other furniture from tipping over, and latch or tape drawers "so they can't be pulled out and used as steps."

Keep bedtime the same:

• Keep the same bedtime routine you already use.
• If your child gets out of bed, calmly lead them back. The AAP says to keep these trips "brief and boring," and to praise them in the morning for staying in bed.
• Avoid rewarding breakouts, such as letting them climb into your bed.

Bottom line: move your toddler when they climb out, reach 35 inches, or outgrow the rail, not on a birthday. Reuse the crib mattress in a toddler bed or a matching kit, add a bed rail only when they move to a bigger bed, and toddler-proof the whole room first.
