Activity Centers and Baby Jumpers (2026): Stationary Play, Not Walkers

This guide is for parents who want a safe place to set a baby down for a few minutes of play. The short answer: a stationary activity center with no wheels, such as the Skip Hop Explore & More or Evenflo Exersaucer, and never a baby walker, which the AAP says is never safe.

How we chose: all four picks are sold by Amazon.com and were in stock in September 2026. Ages, limits and features come from the listings; we did not test them. Walker guidance is from the AAP's page on baby walkers and the rule from the CPSC's stationary activity center guidance.

All four stand on their own base with no wheels. That is what makes something a stationary activity center, and it is the thing to check on anything you buy or borrow.

What the AAP says about walkers

A sit-in baby walker is a seat in a frame on wheels. The American Academy of Pediatrics puts it plainly: "Baby walkers send thousands of children to hospitals every year."

The AAP lists how children in walkers get hurt:

• Stairs. They roll down them, "which often causes broken bones and severe head injuries. This is how most children get hurt in baby walkers."
• Burns. A child can reach higher, pulling a tablecloth with hot coffee, grabbing pot handles or reaching heaters.
• Drowning, by falling into a pool or bathtub.
• Poisoning, since high objects are easier to reach.

They don't teach walking either. "There are no benefits to baby walkers," the AAP says. "Many parents think walkers will help their children learn to walk. But they don't. In fact, walkers can actually delay when a child starts to walk."

Watching closely doesn't fix it. "Most walker injuries happen while adults are watching," and "a child in a walker can move more than 3 feet in 1 second! That is why walkers are never safe to use, even with an adult close by." The AAP has called for a ban on the manufacture and sale of baby walkers with wheels.

What it suggests instead: "Stationary activity centers—they look like walkers but have no wheels. They usually have seats that rotate, tip, and bounce." Play yards and high chairs are on its list too. The AAP's page on movement milestones at 8 to 12 months repeats it: "A stationary exercise saucer or activity center, with a rotating and bouncy seat but no wheels, is a better choice."

Some products sold as activity centers convert into push or sit-in walkers. We left those out.

What 16 CFR part 1238 requires

The CPSC regulates stationary activity centers as a durable infant product at 16 CFR part 1238, which incorporates ASTM F2012. It defines one as a "freestanding product intended to remain stationary that enables a sitting or standing occupant whose torso is completely surrounded by the product to walk, rock, play, spin or bounce, or all of these, within a limited range of motion."

The CPSC's guidance lists the performance requirements, including:

• Leg openings. The Babyjoy recall below involved openings wide enough to entrap a child.
• Stability, so the product does not tip.
• Structural integrity, with extra requirements for spring-supported centers that bounce.
• Motion resistance for open-base centers.

Toys attached to an activity center must also meet the federal toy requirements.

Recent recalls in this category

• Taleco Gear baby jumpers and swings (August 2026): the products "can become unstable, posing fall and impact hazards," and the hanging straps and seat openings "can pose strangulation hazards." CPSC recall notice.

We found no CPSC recalls since 2023 for the four products on this page; Skip Hop's one recall in that period was a teether. For a hand-me-down, search our baby product recall checker.

Comparing the four

Start age. The Skip Hop and Evenflo list 4 months, and Skip Hop adds that the baby should "hold their head upright unassisted." The Baby Einstein and Ingenuity jumpers are recommended from 6 months.

When to stop. Evenflo says 30 in tall or once the child is walking; Skip Hop says 25 lbs or when the child walks or climbs out. The Baby Einstein lists a 25 lb maximum. Ingenuity's listing gives no weight limit, so check the manual.

Height settings. The Baby Einstein has 4 positions, the Evenflo and Ingenuity 3, and the Skip Hop an adjustable foot platform. The manual says which setting fits your baby.

After the baby stage. The Skip Hop becomes a toddler table with a chalkboard top; the Ingenuity becomes an activity table for 12-24+ months. The Evenflo and Baby Einstein list no second mode.

Floor space. The Skip Hop is 31 x 31 in, per its listing. Measure first, and see our guide to baby gear for small apartments if space is tight.

Doorway jumpers

Doorway jumpers, such as the Jolly Jumper, hang a fabric seat from springs clamped to a door frame. The CPSC activity center rule covers freestanding products, and we found no CPSC or AAP page with guidance specific to doorway jumpers, so we have not recommended one. If you use one, follow the maker's instructions on the door frame, age and weight exactly.

Keep sessions short and supervised

We found no AAP time limit specific to activity centers. The AAP's baby activity page says: "Remember, a swing or bouncy seat doesn't count as active play. Be sure to limit the amount of time your baby spends in these." It says playing, reaching, grabbing and tummy time, always with an adult watching, "help babies grow and develop."

• Mix in floor time. Our baby play mats guide covers tummy time.
• Stay in the room. No wheels doesn't make it a babysitter.
• Not for sleep. If your baby dozes off, move them to their crib or bassinet, on their back. The same goes for bouncers and swings.

Which one to buy

• One product from 4 months into the toddler years: the Skip Hop Explore & More.
• Simple and washable: the Evenflo Exersaucer Seaside Splash.
• A bouncer for a 6-month-old: the Baby Einstein Neptune's Ocean Discovery.
• A jumper that becomes a play table: the Ingenuity Spring & Sprout.

If your baby is already crawling and you need somewhere to put them down, a play yard is the other option on the AAP's list.
