Chicco KeyFit 35 vs Nuna PIPA RX (2026): Limits, Load Leg, Base and Stroller Fit

This comparison is for parents deciding between the Chicco KeyFit 35 and the Nuna PIPA RX. Buy the PIPA RX if carrying weight and a load leg matter most: Nuna lists a 7.6 lb carrier and a steel stability leg on its RELX base. Buy the KeyFit 35 if you want the seat to last longer, since Chicco rates it to 35 lb and 32 in against the PIPA RX's 30 lb and 30 in.

How we compared: specs come from Chicco's KeyFit 35 page, Nuna's PIPA RX page and the PIPA RX instruction manual. Safety guidance is from the AAP and NHTSA. We did not test either seat.

Where to buy: in our September 2026 check, neither seat was sold by Amazon.com or by its maker's own store on Amazon, so neither gets a product card. Chicco's current infant seat comparison no longer lists the KeyFit 35, and its KeyFit Max has the same anti-rebound bar and 32 in limit; that is the Chicco we card below. You can search Amazon for the Nuna PIPA RX, but check who the seller is before you buy.

The two seats side by side

"Not stated" means neither the maker page nor the manual we loaded gives the figure.

Weight and height limits

This is the clearest difference. Chicco says the KeyFit 35 "is designed for infants between 4-35 lbs. and up to 32" tall." Nuna says the PIPA RX "is suitable for a child 4 to 30 lbs and 16 to 30 in, or until approximately 18 months of age."

Most babies outgrow an infant seat by height before weight, so the 2 in difference matters more than the 5 lb. A long baby will need to move out of the PIPA RX sooner.

When that happens, the next seat is still rear-facing. NHTSA's car seat guide says to "keep your child rear-facing as long as possible," until they reach "the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat's manufacturer." Our convertible car seat guide covers the seat that comes next.

Carrier weight

Nuna lists the PIPA RX carrier at 7.6 lb "without canopy and inserts," and adds that the canopy and insert weigh "approx. 1 lb." Chicco lists the KeyFit 35 carrier at 10 lb.

About 1.4 to 2.4 lb separates them, depending on whether the PIPA's canopy and insert are on. You feel that on every carry from the car, on top of your baby's own weight. If you mostly click the carrier from base to stroller, it matters less.

Load leg or anti-rebound bar

The two seats use different hardware to limit crash motion. The AAP's car seat guide for families explains both: "Load legs reduce forward rotation in the initial phase of a crash. Anti-rebound bars protect the child during the second phase of a crash from rearward rotation."

• PIPA RX: a "locking 3 piece steel stability leg" on the RELX base, with a "crumple zone within the stability leg" that Nuna says "absorbs impact." Indicators "turn green when in proper contact with vehicle floor."
• KeyFit 35: an "integrated anti-rebound bar" that Chicco says "provides increased stability for every ride while offering more leg room."

Nuna's manual says to "refer to vehicle owner's manual to determine if stability leg can be used." Check that before you choose the PIPA for its leg: some seating positions have floor storage or other features that rule one out.

The base and installation

Both bases are built to make a correct install easier. Chicco's has a SuperCinch "force-multiplying tightener," a spring-loaded leveling foot, bubble levels and a steel-reinforced LockSure belt system. Nuna's RELX base has a 4-position rigid LATCH to "remove or reduce the gap between vehicle seat and base," a 4-position recline, and what it calls a steel-reinforced "True lock" installation.

Whichever you choose, NHTSA says certified technicians at inspection stations "will inspect your car seat free of charge, in most cases." It is worth one visit.

Without the base: taxis and flights

Both carriers install with a vehicle belt. Nuna says the PIPA RX is "ideal for city living and taxis as it can be installed with a vehicle belt - no base needed," and that it is "tested and approved for use in an aircraft with or without the base." Chicco has an installation video titled "Installing Without a Base" for the KeyFit 35 and KeyFit Max.

Stroller fit

Your stroller may decide this for you. The KeyFit 35 "clicks effortlessly into the included-stay-in-car base and compatible Chicco strollers," per Chicco. The PIPA RX "is compatible with all Nuna strollers and their included adapters to make a travel system," per Nuna.

Expiration and registration

Chicco's rule for its infant seats is 6 years from the date of manufacture; our car seat expiration dates by brand links Chicco's page. Nuna's PIPA RX manual says: "Check the label on the underside of the base or child restraint for expiration date information."

Register either seat with its maker so you hear about recalls; NHTSA also offers car seat recall alerts by email. Check our recall list before using a secondhand seat.

Which to buy

• Buy the PIPA RX if you will carry the seat often, want a load leg, or ride in taxis and fly with the carrier alone, and you have or plan to buy a Nuna stroller.
• Buy the KeyFit 35 if you want the higher 35 lb and 32 in limits, an anti-rebound bar, and a Chicco stroller.
• If you cannot find either from a seller you trust: the Chicco KeyFit Max keeps the anti-rebound bar and 32 in limit; the UPPAbaby Aria V2 and Cybex Aton G2 have load-leg bases.
