Baby Wraps and Ring Slings (2026): How to Wear Them Safely

This guide compares six fabric carriers for parents choosing between a stretchy wrap, a ring sling and a woven wrap. For a newborn, the Boba Wrap or Solly Baby Wrap; for quick carries, the WildBird or Boba ring sling. The CPSC's rule for all of them is the same: an upright baby whose face you can always see.

How we chose: every pick is sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and was in stock in September 2026; fabric, weight ranges and hip-health claims are the listings', and we did not test these slings. Safety guidance is from the CPSC's warning about sling carriers and its sling carrier rule; hip guidance is from the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.

The CPSC's 2010 sling warning

In 2010 the CPSC advised parents "to be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger than four months of age." It had identified at least 14 deaths associated with sling-style carriers over 20 years, and "twelve of the deaths involved babies younger than four months of age."

It described two different suffocation hazards:

• Fabric over the face. "In the first few months of life, babies cannot control their heads because of weak neck muscles." The fabric "can press against an infant's nose and mouth, blocking the baby's breathing."
• A curled position. Where a sling keeps the baby "in a curled position bending the chin toward the chest, the airways can be restricted, limiting the oxygen supply." The CPSC notes the baby "will not be able to cry for help."

Many of the babies who died "were either a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues such as a cold." The CPSC urges parents of preemies, twins, babies in fragile health and those with low weight to use extra care and consult their pediatricians about using slings.

What it recommends:

1. Make sure the baby's face "is not covered and is visible at all times to the sling's wearer."
2. If you nurse in a sling, change the baby's position after feeding "so the baby's head is facing up and is clear of the sling and the mother's body."
3. Be vigilant about frequently checking your baby.

Pro tip: look down before every carry. If you can't see your baby's face without moving fabric, or the chin is on the chest, stop and retie or seat the baby higher.

The federal sling rule, 16 CFR part 1228

Since that warning, slings have become a regulated durable infant product. The CPSC's sling carrier rule is codified at 16 CFR part 1228 and incorporates ASTM F2907. It defines a sling carrier as a product "of fabric or sewn fabric construction" designed to hold up to two children "between full-term birth and 35 lbs."

The rule also says how warning labels are attached: sewn to the fabric with seams around the label's entire perimeter. We found no CPSC recalls since 2023 for any brand on this page; our baby product recall checker lists recent carrier recalls.

Stretchy wrap, ring sling or woven wrap

Stretchy wraps (Boba, Solly) are one long piece of knit fabric you tie on and then slide the baby into. They hold a newborn snugly and can be tied before you leave the house.

• The Boba lists 7-35 lbs and a cotton-spandex blend that is machine washable and dryer safe.
• The Solly is lighter TENCEL Modal, which Solly describes as cool to the touch, but it tops out at 25 lbs.

Ring slings (WildBird, Boba, Hip Baby Wrap) are a shorter panel threaded through two rings. They go over one shoulder and tighten with a pull, so they are quick for short carries, but all the weight sits on that shoulder.

• WildBird's listing calls its ring sling "ideal for shorter carries" and points parents of newborns to 6 months to its wrap instead.
• WildBird sizes by wearer: Standard 74" fits most users; Long 90" is for plus-size or tall wearers.

Woven wraps (Hip Baby Wrap) are long, non-stretch fabric. They take the most practice to tie, but go over one or both shoulders, on the front, hip or back, and the listing says they can be adjusted for nursing.

Positioning: upright, face visible, legs in an M

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute describes the M-position as "a natural clinging position for infants", also called the spread-squat or jockey position. It recommends "the thighs spread around the mother's torso and the hips bent so the knees are slightly higher than the buttocks with the thighs supported."

• Upright and high. The CPSC's two hazards are a covered face and a curled, chin-to-chest position; an upright baby with a visible face avoids both.
• Legs in the M. Spread the fabric knee to knee under the baby's bottom so the thighs are supported, not dangling.
• Facing in for the first months. The IHDI says "Inward-Facing Carrying may be healthier for hip development, especially during the first six months."

The Boba Wrap and Solly listings say the IHDI has recognized them, and the Boba Ring Sling listing says it supports the M-position. Those are the makers' claims; the IHDI's babywearing page does not list products.

Brands we left out

• Moby Wrap: every Moby listing we checked was sold by a third-party seller, not Amazon.com or a Moby store.
• Sakura Bloom and Maya Wrap ring slings: we did not find either sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store.
• Unbranded ring slings and water slings: we only chose makers with a brand store.

Which one to buy

• Stretchy newborn wrap: the Boba Wrap, 7-35 lbs.
• A lighter wrap for the first months: the Solly Baby Wrap, 8-25 lbs.
• Linen ring sling with a long size for tall wearers: the WildBird.
• Warm-weather ring sling: the Boba Ring Sling in bamboo and linen.
• Cotton ring sling: the Hip Baby Wrap Ring Sling.
• Woven wrap for front, hip and back carries: the Hip Baby Wrap Woven Wrap.

Bottom line: if your baby is under four months, premature, a low-birth-weight twin or has a cold, ask your pediatrician before using a sling, as the CPSC advises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are baby slings safe for newborns?

They can be used with care, but the CPSC has told parents to be cautious with slings for babies under four months, the age of 12 of the 14 sling deaths it identified. Keep the face uncovered and visible, keep the baby upright rather than curled, and check often.

What is the difference between a wrap and a ring sling?
