Best Baby Gates (2026): Hardware-Mounted for Stairs, Pressure-Mounted for Doorways

A baby gate does one job: keep a crawling baby away from stairs and off-limit rooms. The one decision that matters most is how it is mounted, because that decides where it is safe to use.

Which Baby Gate Should You Buy?

"Top of stairs" reflects only what each maker's listing says. When a listing is silent, follow the installation manual that comes with the gate.

Where Do Baby Gates Go?

The AAP's advice is short: "Install safety gates at both top and bottom of stairs when your child is learning to crawl and walk."

Beyond the stairs, gates close off rooms you can't fully babyproof, such as a kitchen, a bathroom, or a room with a fireplace.

Hardware-Mounted or Pressure-Mounted?

• Hardware-mounted gates screw into the wall or banister. The AAP recommends "gates firmly mounted to the home's studs."
• Pressure-mounted gates wedge between two walls with tension. They install without tools and move easily, which suits doorways and the bottom of stairs.

Key point: never put a pressure-mounted gate at the top of stairs. Regalo's listing says "To prevent falls, never use at the top of stairs," and Safety 1st says the same of its pressure-installed mode.

Some gates do both jobs. The Toddleroo Supergate Ergo and the Cumbor gate come with hardware for stair use, and both makers say the hardware mount is the one to use on stairs.

What Should You Avoid?

The AAP says to "avoid accordion style gates, which can trap an arm or a neck."

It is also worth checking the date on a secondhand gate. Per CPSC, gates made after January 21, 2023 must meet ASTM F1004-22, the current mandatory federal standard, and older gates were built to earlier versions. Search our recall checker for the brand and model before you use one.

How Do You Measure for a Baby Gate?

1. Measure the narrowest point of the opening, wall to wall or wall to banister.
2. Check that your number falls inside the gate's range, including with extensions. The Regalo Easy Step, for example, does not fit openings between 32 and 35.5 in.
3. For a stair banister, check whether the gate includes banister hardware, like the Cumbor's Y-shaped bolts for round railings.

Pro tip: a gate with no threshold, like the Toddleroo Easy Swing & Lock, is easier to walk through while carrying a baby, and there is no bar to trip over at the top of the stairs.
