Bottle Warmers (2026): Warming Breast Milk and Formula Safely

This guide is for parents deciding whether to buy a bottle warmer, and which one. You don't need one: the CDC says babies can drink breast milk and formula cold. If your baby prefers a warm bottle, a warmer replaces the pot on the stove and keeps the microwave out of it; the Philips Avent Premium Fast and Tommee Tippee Easiwarm are where we would start.

How we chose: we compared eight warmers sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store from their listings, without testing them, against the CDC's breast milk storage and preparation page (updated August 2026), the CDC's infant formula preparation and storage page (updated May 2026) and the FDA's Handling Infant Formula Safely.

What the CDC and FDA say about warming

Warming is optional. The CDC says: "Breast milk does not need to be warmed. It can be served room temperature or cold." And: "Infant formula does not need to be warmed before feeding."

If you do warm it, the two agencies agree:

Bottom line: a warmer is a controlled bowl of warm water. It does not replace the wrist test; check every bottle, every time.

Water bath or steam

Countertop warmers use one of two methods.

• Water bath. The bottle sits in warm water, the method the CDC describes for breast milk. The Philips Avent Premium Fast circulates the milk to prevent hot spots, per Philips, and Baby Brezza's Steady Warm mode is also a water bath.
• Steam. Faster, and often paired with a sterilizer. Dr. Brown's Deluxe steams everything; Baby Brezza's Quick Warm mode steams formula and baby food. Baby Brezza says its water-bath mode preserves breast milk nutrients better than steam. That is the maker's claim, and we have not seen it tested.

For breast milk

The CDC's handling rules: "Always thaw the oldest breast milk first," and "Never refreeze breast milk after it has thawed." Also: "Once breast milk is brought to room temperature or warmed, use it within 2 hours." If your baby doesn't finish, "use the leftover milk within 2 hours. After 2 hours, leftover breast milk should be discarded."

• Philips Avent Premium Fast warms in a water bath with automatic temperature control, keeps milk warm for up to 60 minutes, then shuts off. A three-segment light shows progress, which you can read in the dark.
• Baby Brezza Fast Milk Warmer has a water-bath mode for breast milk and a steam mode for formula, with nine presets: buy it if you do both.
• Chicco Digital 2-in-1 has a gentle mode for breast milk, a thaw mode and a rapid mode for formula, and doubles as a sterilizer.

Key point: keep-warm time counts toward the CDC's 2-hour limit. Don't keep milk warm and then save it for the next feed.

For formula and combination feeding

The CDC says to "use prepared infant formula within 2 hours of preparation and within one hour from when feeding begins," and to "Throw out any infant formula that is left in the bottle after feeding your baby."

• Tommee Tippee Easiwarm warms breast milk and ready-made formula to body temperature in about four minutes, per the listing, with one dial and an automatic timer.
• Dr. Brown's Deluxe steams bottles from frozen, refrigerated or room temperature, with presets for bottle type and size, and sterilizes bottles and pacifiers.
• Munchkin Precision has settings for plastic, glass and silicone bottles, remembers your last one, and sterilizes small parts.
• Grownsy 8-in-1 OG adds keep-warm, thaw and food heating in a small unit, sold by Grownsy's own store.

A warmer heats a finished bottle; it does not make powdered formula safer to mix. For babies younger than 2 months, born prematurely or with a weakened immune system, the CDC says to "Boil the water and then wait about five minutes before mixing with powdered infant formula," because "Very hot water (around 158°F/70°C) is needed to kill these germs." Away from home

The Momcozy Portable is cordless and rechargeable, holds 17 oz, and has a breast-milk mode at 90, 95 or 98°F plus a water mode up to 122°F, per the listing. Momcozy says one charge warms 4 oz of refrigerated milk up to 8 times.

Momcozy says the water mode is for preparing formula, but 122°F is well below the very hot water the CDC calls for when mixing powdered formula for younger or vulnerable babies. The CDC's warm-running-water method works anywhere with a warm tap.

Cleaning and daily habits

• Test every bottle on your wrist, even after the warmer says it's done.
• Descale as the maker says. Chicco's listing mentions a descale reminder; follow each manual.
• Clean the bottles too. The FDA says to wash bottles and nipples after each use in a dishwasher with hot water and a heated drying cycle, or by hand in a basin used only for feeding parts. Our bottle sterilizers and drying racks guide covers the options.
• Keep the cord back from the edge of the counter or nightstand.

Do I need a bottle warmer?

How do I know the milk isn't too hot?

Put a few drops on your wrist before feeding, as the CDC advises for breast milk and formula; the FDA says formula "should feel warm, not hot." Do it even when the warmer has finished its cycle.

How long can warmed breast milk sit out?

Two hours. The CDC says: "Once breast milk is brought to room temperature or warmed, use it within 2 hours." Leftovers from a feed follow the same limit, then go; never refreeze thawed milk.

Can I rewarm formula my baby didn't finish?

No. The CDC says: "Throw out any infant formula that is left in the bottle after feeding your baby. The combination of infant formula and your baby's saliva can cause bacteria to grow."
