Best Crib Mattresses (2026): Firmness, Fit, and the Federal Rule

Buy a new crib mattress that fits your crib tightly and doesn't indent under your baby; every one sold in the US has to pass the firmness test in the federal rule, 16 CFR 1241. Organic materials (Naturepedic) and washability are worth paying for if they matter to you; safety claims are not.

How we chose: eight mattresses sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock in September 2026, with sizes, materials and certifications from the listings or brands (we did not test them), and every brand searched in CPSC's recall database.

"Two-sided" means a firmer infant side and a softer toddler side. Use the infant side for a baby; the maker's label shows which is which.

What the federal rule covers

CPSC's crib mattress business guidance says the rule is codified at 16 C.F.R. part 1241 and incorporates ASTM F2933. Mattresses made after August 15, 2022 must meet ASTM F2933-21 with CPSC's modifications, and those made after May 3, 2026 the newer F2933-25.

It covers "full-size crib mattresses, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) non-full-size crib mattresses (provided with the crib), and after-market mattresses for play yards and non-full-size cribs (sold separately from the crib or play yard)."

The requirements CPSC lists include mattress dimensions, seam stitching, coil springs and "sleep surface firmness." So a basic coil mattress and an organic one both have to meet the same firmness and dimension requirements; what you choose between is everything else.

How firm is firm enough

The AAP's guide to safe sleep gives the test: "A firm surface means that it shouldn't indent when your baby is lying on it. Any surface that inclines more than 10 degrees isn't safe for your baby to sleep on."

That is why the infant side of a two-sided mattress is the firmer one, and why you can't add softness on top. The AAP lists "mattress toppers" among the soft objects that "can increase your baby's risk of entrapment, suffocation or strangulation," along with pillows, blankets and bumper pads.

Checking the fit

A full-size crib is standardized. CPSC defines it as "a crib with dimensions of 52⅜ in. ± ⅝ in. (1330 mm ± 16 mm) by 28 in. ± ⅝ in. (711 mm ± 16 mm)," which is why most mattresses here are listed at about 52 x 28 inches.

The AAP says to "make sure your crib mattress is designed for your specific crib and that it fits tightly." CPSC's crib checklist asks for "a firm, tight-fitting mattress so a baby cannot get trapped between the mattress and the crib."

• Check the corners. Mattresses listed at 27.25 or 27.5 inches wide are a little narrower than the crib; push the mattress into one corner and look at the gap along the other side.
• Use a sheet made for crib mattresses. A loose or adult sheet is one of the soft items the AAP says to keep out.
• Read the crib's manual. Some crib makers specify the mattress size or thickness their crib takes.

We found no current CPSC or AAP page that gives a finger-width test for the gap, so we don't offer one. If you can see a gap, the mattress doesn't fit tightly.

Mini crib and play yard mattresses

This is where the recent recalls are. CPSC's rule requires aftermarket mattresses for mini cribs and play yards to be the same size as the original mattress or larger, lie flat on the floor of the product, and carry "test-verified compatible model information." CPSC adds: "Generic compatibility based on a size measurement cannot meet these requirements."

• In January 2026, CPSC recalled KEAWIS crib mattresses because they "may not adequately fit certain play yards or non-full-sized cribs, which could create gaps posing a deadly entrapment hazard."
• In August 2026, it recalled play yard and crib mattresses sold on Amazon by Voomf for the same fit problem, and because the full-size mattresses violated the flammability standard.

Key point: for a mini crib or play yard, use the mattress it came with, or a replacement that names your exact model. Our play yard guide has more.

Breathable mattresses and SIDS

No mattress has been shown to reduce SIDS risk. Newton says its core ensures "optimal breathability, reducing the risk of suffocation and overheating." That is the company's claim, and it is the kind the AAP warns about: it says to avoid products that aren't consistent with safe sleep recommendations, "especially true for products that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS or other sleep-related infant deaths. There's just no evidence that this is true."

A breathable or washable mattress can still be a good buy for easy cleaning. It doesn't replace the basics: back to sleep, a firm flat surface, and nothing else in the crib.

Coil, foam or fiber

All three can meet the rule, so choose on practicalities.

• Coil (Sealy Firm Rest): firm and durable, but heavier to lift when you change the sheet at 3 a.m.
• Foam (Graco, Moonlight Slumber): light; both cite CertiPUR-US certification for their foam.
• Fiber and other cores (Delta, Babyletto, Newton, Naturepedic): often lighter still, and Newton's core can be rinsed clean.

GREENGUARD Gold (low chemical emissions) and GOTS (organic textiles) are about materials, not sleep safety; we list them as the makers' claims.

Pro tip: buy two waterproof protectors made for crib mattresses so one can be in the wash, and fit them snugly, like a fitted sheet.

Recalls we checked

• No crib mattress recalls turned up for Sealy, Graco, Newton, Naturepedic, Moonlight Slumber, Babyletto or Delta Children.
• Older recalls elsewhere in the category include Stork Craft crib mattresses in 2015 and Dream On Me mattresses in 2017, both for flammability. Neither brand's mattress is on our list.
• Firmness failures happen too. In 2023, CPSC announced a recall of Room & Board crib mattresses made by Restwell that failed provisions of the standard, "including the firmness test."

What we left out

• Aftermarket play yard pads and mini crib mattresses that list a size rather than compatible models.
• Mattresses from unbranded third-party sellers, and any listing sold only through a reseller.
• Duplicates. Sealy and Serta sell many near-identical models; we kept one Sealy.

Not necessarily, if it is firm, fits tightly, has no sagging or damage, and hasn't been recalled. Check the manufacture date and label, and replace it if it no longer passes the AAP's no-indent test.
