Best Diaper Pails (2026): Odor Control, Refill Costs, and Bag Types

A diaper pail looks like a one-time purchase, but the refills keep costing money for as long as your child wears diapers. This guide compares seven pails sold by Amazon.com on the three things that matter: how the pail holds in odor, what bags it takes, and what those bags cost per diaper.

Key point: the odor claims below are the brands' own. We have not tested these pails. What we can compare from the listings is the design and the math on refills.

List prices are from listings sold by Amazon.com, checked in September 2026. Some brands state capacity for the pail and others for the refill, so the last column is not like for like.

What Do Refills Cost per Diaper?

This is the number most comparisons skip. We took each refill's price and the number of newborn diapers the listing says it holds, then divided:

Three caveats:

• Newborn diapers are small. Every figure is the listing's count for newborn-sized diapers. Bigger diapers fill a bag faster, so the real cost per diaper rises as your baby grows, for every brand.
• The Ubbi works with any trash bag. Ubbi's own bags are optional, and a standard kitchen bag that fits may cost less still.
• Some refills are not priced here. We could not find Diaper Dekor refills sold by Amazon.com or Dekor, only by resellers, so we do not quote a price. We did not price the Diaper Genie Platinum's Easy Roll refill separately.

Pro tip: check refill compatibility before you buy the pail. Munchkin's refill listing says its rings are "Guaranteed to fit Diaper Genie Complete", which gives a Diaper Genie owner a second refill source. Diaper Genie's Essentials refill lists the Complete and Expressions pails.

Which Pail Controls Odor Best?

We cannot rank odor control without testing, and we have not tested these pails. Each pail uses a different method.

• Sealed metal (Ubbi, Diaper Genie Platinum). Ubbi says its powder-coated steel and rubber seal contain smells, and that the sliding lid limits air movement when opened. The Platinum is stainless steel with clamps.
• Clamps and a filter (Diaper Genie Complete). Double Air-Tite clamps close the bag below the lid, and a carbon filter sits in the lid. Diaper Genie says its refill film has an antimicrobial built in.
• Self-sealing lids (Munchkin STEP and UV). Munchkin says the bag stays sealed whether the lid is open or closed. The STEP adds an Arm & Hammer baking soda cartridge; the UV adds a UV light.
• Trap door (Diaper Dekor). The diaper drops through a trap door into a continuous liner. Dekor says its recycled ABS plastic "won't absorb odors" and can be cleaned with household cleaners.

Key point: Munchkin's UV claim is that its light "eliminate[s] up to 99% of bacteria and viruses". That is the brand's own figure. It is not a replacement for emptying the pail and washing your hands after changes.

Which Pail Is Easiest to Use One-Handed?

When you are holding a baby, a foot pedal matters. Six of the seven pails here have one: both Diaper Genies, both Munchkins and both Dekors. The Diaper Genie Platinum adds a soft-closing lid, which the brand says is quieter in the nursery.

The Ubbi is the exception. Its sliding lid needs a hand, and in return it has a childproof lock.

Best for:

• Crawlers and toddlers who explore: the Ubbi, for its childproof lock.
• Night changes: a pedal pail with a soft close, such as the Diaper Genie Platinum.

Should You Get a Pail With Standard Bags?

It depends on how much you value flexibility over convenience.

A standard-bag pail (the Ubbi here) never locks you into a refill. If a store runs out of one brand, any bag of the right size will do. Once your child is out of diapers, it can serve as an ordinary bin.

A refill-system pail (Diaper Genie, Munchkin, Dekor) seals each diaper or batch inside its own film. That is the design the brands credit for odor control. The cost is a refill you buy for as long as you use the pail.

The Diaper Dekor pails split the difference in one way. Their continuous liner lets you cut off only what you need, and once diapering is over, removing the trap door insert turns them into hands-free trash cans.

Bottom line:

• Lowest running cost: the Ubbi.
• Lowest pail price with a pedal: the Diaper Dekor EKO Classic at $47.99, though its refills come from resellers.
• Cheapest refills that are easy to find: the Diaper Genie Complete. Its Essentials refills are sold by Amazon.com at about 1.1¢ per newborn diaper.

Do You Need a Diaper Pail at All?

Not every home does. If an outdoor bin is a short walk away and you empty a lidded kitchen trash can daily, you may manage without one. A pail earns its place when:

• the nursery is upstairs or far from the outdoor bin;
• you use cloth diapers and want a separate container (Dekor says its Plus pail is "Great for Cloth Diapers" in the listing title);
• you want odors contained between trips outside.
