Clek Foonf vs Diono Radian 3QXT (2026): Width, Weight, Limits and 3-Across

This comparison is for parents choosing between two narrow convertible car seats, often for fitting three across: the Clek Foonf and the Diono Radian 3QXT. Buy the Foonf for its steel anti-rebound bar, rigid-LATCH forward-facing install and a width Clek publishes (16.9 in). Buy the Radian 3QXT if you want one seat from a 4 lb newborn to a 120 lb booster rider.

How we compared: Foonf specs are from Clek's Foonf page. Diono's US store showed "Store Unavailable" when we tried it in September 2026, so Radian 3QXT limits come from the Radian 3QXT instruction manual (a copy hosted on ManualsLib). The Radian 3QXT was not sold by Amazon.com or Diono on Amazon when we checked; Amazon.com sold the Radian 3R, which we card instead. We did not test these seats.

Width and three across

Width is why most people shortlist these two. Clek lists the Foonf's "Seat Width: 16.9 in." and a 13 in base, and says the narrow design "saves space and makes 3-across seating possible." Three Foonfs add up to about 50.7 in.

For the Radian 3QXT, we could not confirm a width on Diono's site. Diono's Amazon listings call the Radian 3R "Slim Fit 3 Across," and the listing gives a 17 in width. Measure the 3QXT, or check its box, before you count on it.

The seat is only half the sum. The AAP's car seat guide for families notes that "it is sometimes difficult to install a car safety seat tightly in the middle if the vehicle seat is narrow or uneven. Also, many vehicles do not have lower anchors for the middle seating position." It says a child passenger safety technician "can help you decide which place is best to install your child's car safety seat in your vehicle."

Rear-facing limits

Both reach 50 lb rear-facing, which is where the AAP wants children to stay as long as possible. Its guide says infants and toddlers "should continue to ride in a rear facing seat as long as possible until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat manufacturer."

• Foonf: 14–50 lb and 25–43 in, per Clek, with a minimum of "able to sit upright alone." With the separately sold infant-thingy, Clek says it fits "a child that's 5 lb and 19 in."
• Radian 3QXT: 4–50 lb and 18–44 in, per the manual, which also says infants under 22 lb and under 1 year "MUST use this child restraint rear-facing." It adds that for newborns "you must consult the infant's doctor before using this child restraint."

In practice, a newborn in the Foonf needs the infant-thingy or an infant seat first; see our best infant car seats. The Radian starts at 4 lb on its own.

Forward-facing and booster years

Forward-facing with the harness, both go to 65 lb. The Foonf's height limit is 49 in; the Radian 3QXT's manual gives 57 in. Clek recommends "2+ years" before turning the Foonf forward, with 1 year as the minimum; the AAP's advice is to stay rear-facing to the seat's limit.

After the harness, the seats diverge. The Radian 3QXT becomes a booster "40–120 lb (18–54 kg)" and 40–57 in tall, per its manual. The Foonf does not; you will buy a booster later. The AAP says it is best for children to ride in a seat with a harness "as long as possible, at least to 4 years of age."

Installation and weight

The Foonf's forward-facing install uses rigid LATCH, which Clek pairs with its REACT crumple system that "actively reduces the forces transferred to a child in a frontal collision." Rear-facing, it installs with flexible LATCH or the seat belt, with built-in lock-offs and a steel anti-rebound bar.

The Radian 3QXT manual sets LATCH limits: do not use the lower anchors "rear-facing when restraining a child weighing more than 35 lb (15.8 kg) or forward-facing when restraining a child weighing more than 40 lb (18 kg)." Above those weights you install with the vehicle belt.

Weight matters if you move the seat between cars. Clek gives the Foonf 38 lb rear-facing and 33 lb forward-facing, and calls it "best for stationary" use. We could not confirm the 3QXT's weight from Diono; the Radian 3R listing gives 23.4 lb.

Expiration

Clek gives the Foonf a "9-year Expiration Date." The Radian 3QXT manual says not to use the seat if it is "expired (over 10 years from date of purchase)." Note the different starting points; our car seat expiration dates by brand explains where to find the date on each label.

Which to buy

• Buy the Clek Foonf if you want a published 16.9 in width, a rigid-LATCH forward-facing install and an anti-rebound bar, and you can live with 38 lb: Clek Foonf.
• Buy the Clek Fllo for the same width and 50 lb rear-facing limit at 28 lb; Clek suggests it "if you plan to use a Seat Belt installation (common for 3-across or center seat installs)": Clek Fllo.
• Buy a Radian if one seat from birth to booster matters more; Amazon.com sells the Radian 3R. If you find a 3QXT from a seller you trust, check the width on the box.
