The Snoo is Happiest Baby's responsive smart bassinet, and Happiest Baby says it is "the first—and only—medical device to receive De Novo authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its ability to keep sleeping babies safely on their backs." Nothing below claims that. What these bassinets and one sound machine offer is the rest of what parents want from a Snoo: a safe place for the baby to sleep beside you, and, on some of them, sound and motion.

What Does the AAP Say a Baby Needs to Sleep Safely?

Less than the smart-bassinet market suggests. The AAP's advice is to:

• "Place your baby in a crib, bassinet, portable crib or play yard that meets the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)."
• "Share a room with your baby for at least the first 6 months of life."
• Keep out "pillows and pillow-like toys, quilts, comforters, mattress toppers, non-fitted sheets, blankets, toys, bumper pads or related products that attach to crib slats or sides."
• "Don't use weighted blankets, sleepers, swaddles or other weighted objects on or near your baby."

• Happiest Baby SNOObie ($69.95): the Snoo's white noise in a portable sound machine. Keep it on a shelf or nightstand, never in the bassinet.

When Do Babies Outgrow a Bassinet?

Each bassinet sets its own limit. Maxi-Cosi, for example, says to use the Iora from 0 to 6 months, until the baby reaches 20 lb or can push up on hands and knees, whichever comes first. The Dream On Me Karley lists newborns up to 25 lb. Follow the manual for yours, then move to a crib or a play yard that meets CPSC standards.
