Nursery Gliders and Rockers (2026): Pinch Points, Recliner Hazards, and Recalls

A nursery glider is for feeds and soothing while you are awake. The AAP says the risk of sleep-related infant death is up to 67 times higher when a baby sleeps with someone on a couch or soft armchair, and CPSC recalls show the other hazards are the moving base and, on recliners, the footrest. For a plain glider, the Storkcraft Hoop comes with an ottoman; the DaVinci Juno swivels without a footrest mechanism; and the manual DaVinci Suzy and Babyletto Kiwi recline without a motor.

How we chose: seven chairs sold by Amazon.com and in stock in September 2026, described from their listings (we did not test them), with safety information from the AAP's guide to safe sleep, the CPSC recall notices linked below and a 2023 CPSC staff letter on recliner entrapment. None of the seven models is in a recall we found.

Dozing off in the glider

The main risk has nothing to do with how the chair is built. The AAP says: "The risk of sleep-related infant death is up to 67 times higher when infants sleep with someone on a couch, soft armchair or cushion."

A padded glider at 3 a.m. is that kind of seat. The AAP's advice: "Avoid falling asleep with your baby in other spots, too." If you notice yourself nodding off mid-feed, put your baby down on their back in their own crib or bassinet before you settle back. Key point: a glider is for feeding, rocking and reading while you are awake. It is never a sleep space for your baby, alone or on your chest.

What glider recalls have involved

CPSC recalls of gliders and rockers show three recurring hazards.

Moving parts that pinch or trap. In 2011 Big Lots recalled about 375,000 glider recliners with ottomans. CPSC said "an exposed gap between the moving parts of the chair and the base framework can allow access to toddlers and infants, posing an entrapment hazard," and that other exposed moving parts on the chair and the ottoman "can pose finger pinching and crushing hazards." CPSC received two reports of children under age 2 found trapped at the neck; adults freed both without permanent injury (recall notice).

Bases that break. In 2012 LaJobi recalled about 33,000 Graco-branded Avalon glider rockers and 5,600 CNS Box 2 / Katelyn gliders because "the base of the glider rocker can crack or break, posing a fall hazard." There were 26 reports of Avalon rockers breaking, one with a minor injury (recall notice). An earlier L. Powell recall of about 36,000 glider rockers cited soft wood and "nails rather than with wood screws in the gliding joints" (recall notice).

Electrical parts in powered recliners. In 2025 Bexco Enterprises recalled about 9,030 Babyletto Kiwi Electronic Recliner and Swivel Gliders because "the USB module in the recliner arm can overheat and spark." The firm had 37 reports of overheating, smoking or sparking, including one minor injury, and the remedy is a free repair kit from Babyletto (recall notice). The Kiwi in our list is the manual model, with no USB port.

Recliner footrests and toddlers

A footrest adds a hazard that plain gliders don't have. In a 2023 letter asking standards bodies to write a recliner safety standard, CPSC staff described 13 incidents, including 7 deaths, involving children between 8 months and 5 years old from 2011 through 2021.

The letter names two patterns: "Entrapment in the foot support lift mechanisms beneath the recliner, which is compounded by motorized lift mechanism," and "Entrapment related to the movable foot support." In one case from May 2022, "an 11-month-old was entrapped underneath a motorized recliner and crushed when an older sibling 'playing with the buttons' closed the foot rest on him." CPSC staff also wrote that they were "unaware of a published consensus standard that specifically addresses recliner entrapment."

In a nursery, that means:

• Check under and behind the chair before you close a footrest or recline.
• Close the footrest when you get up, so there's no gap for a crawler to reach into.
• Keep older children off the lever or buttons.
• Or skip the footrest: the Storkcraft Hoop, Delta Children, DaVinci Olive and Juno don't have one.

The manual DaVinci Suzy and Babyletto Kiwi have no motor or USB module, and the Oxford Baby Uptown reclines when you push back and uses a lever for the footrest.

Glider, swivel, recliner or rocker

• Glider: moves back and forth on a fixed track, so the footprint doesn't change. The Storkcraft Hoop glides only.
• Swivel glider: adds rotation, useful for reaching a changing table or turning toward the crib. The Delta Children, DaVinci Olive and DaVinci Juno swivel and glide.
• Recliner glider: adds a leg rest for resting between feeds. The Oxford Baby Uptown, DaVinci Suzy and Babyletto Kiwi recline, glide and swivel.
• Rocker: a curved base that rolls on the floor. It needs clear space behind it, and a crawling baby can reach the base.

Our picks

With an ottoman: Storkcraft Hoop Glider & Ottoman. The set here that includes a separate ottoman, with a stated 250 lb maximum weight and a 17.5 in seat height. It glides but doesn't swivel.

Swivel gliders: Delta Children, DaVinci Olive and DaVinci Juno. The Delta Children is fully upholstered with thickly padded arms, on steel mechanisms Delta says run quietly. The Olive adds a storage ottoman. The Juno has the widest seat of the three, about 34 in across the chair.

Recliners: Oxford Baby Uptown, DaVinci Suzy manual and Babyletto Kiwi manual. The Uptown is the only recliner here with a stated weight capacity (250 lb). The Kiwi has water-repellent performance fabric. All three need the footrest precautions above.

For a small room, choose a glider without a footrest, such as the Juno or Delta Children; for long nights, a manual recliner.

Setting up the corner

• Placement: leave space around a swivel and behind a recliner, and keep the chair away from window-blind cords; see our guide to cordless blackout curtains.
• Assembly: follow the maker's instructions exactly (the L. Powell recall came down to how the gliding joints were fastened), and check now and then that screws and base joints are tight.

Pro tip: before the first night feed, decide where your baby goes if you feel sleepy: their own crib or bassinet, made up and ready.

If you choose a recliner, check under it before closing the footrest, keep the footrest closed when not in use and keep children away from the controls. Several picks here are manual.

Was the Babyletto Kiwi recalled?

The electronic Kiwi Recliner and Swivel Glider with USB ports was, in July 2025, because its USB module can overheat and spark; owners can register at babylettorecall.com for a free repair kit. The Kiwi we list is the manual recliner glider, which has no USB module.

Do I need a glider at all?

No. Any stable, comfortable chair works for feeding. A glider or rocker adds a soothing motion and a recliner adds a footrest; none is a safety requirement.
