A sound machine masks the dishwasher, the dog and the older sibling. A night light lets you feed and change a baby without switching on the big light.

Both are simple, but where you put them matters more than which one you buy. This guide compares seven by the features that change daily use: volume control, a timer, how they're powered, and whether they need an app. It also covers what a hearing study and the CPSC say about volume and cords.

Key point: every machine here has adjustable volume. Use it. The loudest setting is not the right setting.

How Loud Should a White Noise Machine Be for a Baby?

Quieter than you'd think. In a 2014 study in Pediatrics, researchers at the University of Toronto measured 14 infant sleep machines at maximum volume.

At 30 cm (about a foot), all 14 were louder than 50 A-weighted decibels, "the current recommended noise limit for infants in hospital nurseries." Three produced more than 85 dBA. Played at that level for more than 8 hours, that "exceeds current occupational limits for accumulated noise exposure in adults and risks noise-induced hearing loss."

The study concluded that these machines "are capable of producing output sound pressure levels that may be damaging to infant hearing and auditory development."

Children's National Hospital turns that into three rules:

• Volume: keep it below 50 dB, "similar to a soft conversation."
• Distance: keep the machine at least two feet from the crib.
• Time: there's no need for all-night noise. Turn it off once your baby is asleep.

Pro tip: a timer makes the third rule automatic. The Frida, Munchkin and Homedics machines shut off on their own; the Hatch Baby runs on a schedule you set in its app.

Where Should a Sound Machine Go in the Nursery?

Across the room, on a dresser or shelf, and never in or on the crib. Two rules decide it:

• Distance for hearing. Children's National says at least two feet. Sound fades with distance, so across the room is better still.
• Distance for cords. The CPSC's advice on baby monitor cords applies to any plugged-in device near a crib: "Always keep ALL cords and monitor parts out of the reach of babies and young children -- at least 3 feet away," per the CPSC.

• Budget plug-in: Homedics SoundSleep ($24.99). Six sounds, a 15, 30 or 60 minute timer, and a wall adapter.
• Budget cordless: Munchkin Shhh ($20.99). Shushing, heartbeat and white noise, on 2 AA batteries. It shuts off after 30 minutes at most, which fits the "off once asleep" advice.

Sound Machines That Grow Into Toddler Clocks

• Now: 7 sounds with an auto-off timer, and a night light with three warm glow levels plus a blackout mode.
• Later: a color routine for toddlers. Red means bedtime, yellow comes 15 minutes before wake time, and green means it's time to get up.
• A toddler lock stops little hands from changing the settings.

Which Night Light Is Best for Night Feeds?

The dimmest one that lets you see. For feeds and changes, you want enough light to check a latch or a diaper without waking everyone up.

The LOHAS-LED Amber Plug-In Night Light ($17.99) dims from 5 to 80 lumens and switches itself on at dusk. It plugs straight into the outlet, so there's no cord to manage. Its low-blue and sleep claims are the brand's own; we found no US health agency guidance on night-light color for babies.

The Hatch Baby and Frida 3-in-1 also work as night lights, so if you buy one of those you may not need a separate light.

Pro tip: put the night light near where you feed, not over the crib. A dark room around the crib and a dim light by the chair is the aim.
