Crib Sheets and Waterproof Mattress Protectors (2026): Fit Matters More Than Fabric

This guide is for parents buying crib sheets and deciding whether they need a mattress protector. The AAP allows one textile in the crib, a fitted sheet, so fit matters more than print or fabric: buy one sized and deep enough for your mattress, with elastic all the way around, like the Burt's Bees Baby or HonestBaby organic sheets. For leaks, a thin waterproof layer, not a cushioned pad.

How we chose: we compared five standard sheets, two waterproof options and one mini crib sheet from their listings, without testing them, each sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store. The guidance is quoted from the AAP's parent's guide to safe sleep (last updated September 2026), CPSC's Safe Sleep page and CPSC's crib mattress business guidance. What the AAP and CPSC say

The AAP's safe sleep guide: "Make sure your crib mattress is designed for your specific crib and that it fits tightly. Use a fitted sheet only—nothing else should be in the crib with your baby."

It defines firm: "A firm surface means that it shouldn't indent when your baby is lying on it." And it lists what counts as soft bedding: "pillows and pillow-like toys, quilts, comforters, mattress toppers, non-fitted sheets, blankets, toys, bumper pads or related products that attach to crib slats or sides." These, the AAP says, "can increase your baby's risk of entrapment, suffocation or strangulation."

CPSC says it in three words, "Bare is Best," meaning "nothing but a fitted sheet in a crib, bassinet or play yard."

Bottom line: the sheet should grip the mattress so it cannot pull loose, and add nothing soft on top. That rules out flat sheets, tucked blankets and plush toppers.

Checking the fit before you buy

Three measurements and one kind of elastic.

1. Width and length. CPSC defines a full-size crib by its inside dimensions, 52⅜ in by 28 in, give or take ⅝ in, and standard crib sheets are sold as 28 x 52 in to match. Mini cribs and play yards are "non-full-size" and vary, so measure the mattress.
2. Depth. This is where sheets go wrong. Burt's Bees cuts its sheet for a 5-1/2 in mattress; Gerber and Biloban list 8 in, TL Care 9 in. Too shallow and the sheet strains at the corners and can pop off; far too deep and it can leave loose fabric. Check your mattress's listed thickness, or measure it.
3. Elastic. Look for elastic all the way around the edge. Burt's Bees, HonestBaby, TL Care, Biloban and American Baby Company list it; Hudson Baby lists elastic on the corners only.

After each change, pull up at the middle of each side. If the sheet lifts off the edge or a corner slides, it doesn't fit that mattress.

The five fitted sheets

• Burt's Bees Baby Organic: GOTS-certified organic cotton with what the brand calls BEESNUG 360° elastic, plus extra fabric on the bottom edge to stop the sheet creeping up. Cut for a standard 5-1/2 in mattress.
• HonestBaby Organic: organic cotton jersey with all-around elastic.
• Gerber Baby 2-Pack: two jersey knit sheets for mattresses up to 8 in deep. The listing doesn't give the fiber content.
• Hudson Baby Cotton: a long list of prints, but corner-only elastic and no stated depth, so check it most carefully on your mattress.
• TL Care Cotton: cotton jersey with a full elastic band and a 9 in depth for a thicker mattress.

Buy Burt's Bees for a standard 5 to 6 in mattress if you want organic cotton; TL Care or Gerber if your mattress is deeper.

Waterproof protectors: thin, not cushioned

Diapers leak, and a waterproof layer keeps the mattress core dry. If your mattress already has a waterproof cover, you may not need a protector at all.

If you add one, keep it thin. The AAP lists "mattress toppers" among the soft bedding to keep out, and says a firm surface "shouldn't indent when your baby is lying on it." Several protector listings we checked describe "extra thick padding," "gentle cushioning" or "extra loft" that "adds ... a cozy cushion." We left those out: a pad sold on softness undoes the firm mattress underneath it.

• Graco Premium Waterproof Protector: a PVC-free TPU waterproof layer with an elasticized bottom and GREENGUARD Gold certification, and no padding claims. It goes on the mattress, with a fitted sheet on top.
• Biloban Waterproof Crib Sheets: sheet and waterproof backing in one fitted piece, so only one layer sits on the mattress. Microfiber jersey, two to a pack, sold by the Biloban store.

Key point: a protector goes under the fitted sheet and must fit as tightly as the sheet does. Two loose layers are worse than one tight one.

Mini cribs and play yards

Neither has one standard size, so the sheet has to match the exact mattress or pad.

Mini cribs. The American Baby Company 3-pack is cotton jersey, 24 x 38 in with a 5 in depth. Its listing says it fits "most standard pack and play mattresses and mini crib mattresses"; measure yours anyway, because "most" isn't "yours."

Play yards. Use the pad the play yard came with, and nothing on it but a sheet that fits. CPSC's rule requires aftermarket play yard and mini crib mattresses to name the models they have been tested with, and says "Generic compatibility based on a size measurement cannot meet these requirements." In a 2025 recall of aftermarket play yard mattresses sold on Amazon, CPSC warned: "Babies can suffocate in gaps between an undersized mattress, or extra padding, and side walls of a product."

How many, and washing

• Two or three sheets per sleep space, so a 2 a.m. leak means a clean sheet, not a wash cycle. The Gerber and Biloban two-packs and the American Baby Company three-pack do it in one buy.
• Wash as the label says. Graco says to wash its protector cold on a delicate cycle and tumble dry low.
• Recheck the fit after washing. Cotton can shrink.
• Retire stretched sheets. If the elastic is loose or the sheet slides, replace it.

Can I put a regular crib sheet on a play yard or mini crib?

Are organic cotton crib sheets safer?
