## What the federal bassinet rules require

CPSC's [bassinet and cradle guidance](https://www.cpsc.gov/Business--Manufacturing/Business-Education/Business-Guidance/Bassinets-and-Cradles) explains that the mandatory rule is codified at 16 C.F.R. part 1218 and incorporates ASTM F2194. Bassinets made or imported on or after February 21, 2026 must meet the newer ASTM F2194-25.

CPSC defines a bassinet as "a small bed designed primarily to provide sleeping accommodations for infants," which at rest "is intended to have a head-to-toe sleep surface less than or equal to 10 degrees from horizontal." The requirements include stability, side height, the mattress and sleeping pad, and a flatness test for segmented mattresses.

Bedside sleepers have a second rule. CPSC's [bedside sleeper guidance](https://www.cpsc.gov/Business--Manufacturing/Business-Education/Business-Guidance/Bedside-Sleepers) describes one as a sleeping environment for infants that "is secured to an adult bed." It must meet the bassinet rule plus 16 C.F.R. part 1222 (ASTM F2906), which adds requirements for "maximum separation from the bed" and "attachment to adult bed."

**Key point:** a bedside sleeper is only as safe as its attachment. Strap or anchor it to your bed as the instructions say, and check for a gap between the bassinet and your mattress every time you move it.

## Room-sharing, and how long a bassinet lasts

The AAP's [guide to safe sleep](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/sleep/Pages/a-parents-guide-to-safe-sleep.aspx) recommends that you "share a room with your baby for at least the first 6 months of life," keeping your baby's sleep area "close to your bed—but not in the same bed." It says room-sharing "can decrease the risk of SIDS by as much as 50%" and makes night feeds, comforting and checking on your baby easier.

A bassinet may not last the full six months. Maxi-Cosi, for example, says to use the Iora until your baby "is 20 lbs. or can push up on their hands and knees, whichever comes first." At the limit in your manual, move your baby to a [crib](https://nurseryproof.com/sleep-nursery/best-cribs) or a [play yard](https://nurseryproof.com/sleep-nursery/best-play-yards); either can stay in your room for the rest of the six months.


## Bedside sleeper or standalone

**A bedside sleeper** puts your baby at mattress height, an arm's reach away, which helps with night feeds and with recovery from a C-section, when getting up is hard. The Maxi-Cosi Iora and both Baby Delight models attach to your bed; the HALO BassiNest models slide or swivel over it on their own base.

The AAP is specific: if you bring your baby into your bed to feed or comfort them, "place them back in their own sleep space before you go to sleep." A bedside bassinet makes that step shorter.

**A standalone bassinet** is simpler. The Chicco LullaGo Anywhere SE and Dream On Me Karley weigh about 12 lbs, so they move to the living room for naps, and with nothing attached there is no gap to check.

For night feeds or a C-section, buy a bedside or over-bed design such as the Iora or a HALO BassiNest. For a plain bassinet that folds for storage, the LullaGo Anywhere SE or the Karley.

## Sleep products to avoid

The AAP says alternative sleep surfaces "are only considered a safe option IF they comply with the June 2021 CPSC rule that all infant sleep products meet existing federal safety standards for cribs, bassinets, portable cribs or play yards." It names what that covers: "inclined sleep products, hammocks, baby boxes, in-bed sleepers, baby nests and pods, compact bassinets, travel bassinets and baby tents. If a product doesn't meet federal safety standards, don't use it."

So skip:

- **In-bed sleepers and baby nests** that go in your bed between you.

- **Travel bassinets and portable bassinets with no stand**, unless they state a federal sleep standard.

CPSC's recalls show what goes wrong. In June 2025 it recalled [ZHORANGE portable bassinets](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2025/ZHORANGE-Portable-Bassinets-Recalled-Due-to-Risk-of-Serious-Injury-or-Death-from-Fall-Hazard-Violation-of-Federal-Standard-for-Infant-Sleep-Products-Sold-on-Amazon-com-by-DFD-Trading) because "the sides are too low to contain the infant and the portable bassinets do not have a stand." In March 2026 it recalled about 110,400 [AirClub convertible bassinets](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2026/AirClub-Convertible-Bassinets-Recalled-Due-to-Risk-of-Serious-Injury-or-Death-from-Fall-Hazard-Violates-Mandatory-Standard-for-Bedside-Sleepers) because the way they attached to the adult bed "creates an opening between the bedside sleeper and mattress."

## What goes in it

The pad it came with and a fitted sheet made for it. CPSC's rule for every sleep space is "'Bare is Best' - nothing but a fitted sheet in a crib, bassinet or play yard." The federal standard covers the pad as part of the bassinet, so don't swap in a thicker one or add a topper.

The AAP's surface test applies: "A firm surface means that it shouldn't indent when your baby is lying on it." Lay your baby on their back every time, in a [sleep sack](https://nurseryproof.com/sleep-nursery/best-sleep-sacks-by-tog) or [swaddle](https://nurseryproof.com/sleep-nursery/best-swaddles-and-when-to-stop) instead of a blanket.

Canopies, mobiles and storage baskets are extras: keep canopies up and clear of your baby, and the basket for diapers, not for anything your baby could reach.
